Committee : Alfred Chetham Strode, E;q., R.M. Thomas > ick, Esq. Frederick Moss, tsq. Julius Vogel, Esq. Dr Richardson St. John Branigan, Esq. Thomas Calcutt, Esq. Secretary j W. M. Hopper. This Society was established in May, 1862, for the purpose of relieving the distress of the I poorer inhabitants ot the colony, without reference to creed or nation. The committee haye to report that since October, 1862, to 31st December, 1863, they have relieved an average number of 35 cases weekly. The receipts have amounted to £1583 9s 7d, and the disbursf ments to £1421 Is 4d. The Institution is now anVding weekly relief to 40 cases, and the demands on its assistance are continually increasing. The Committee, in seeking the support of the Public, would point out that thnugh as yet the Society is in its infancy, it has been the means of alleviating a great rieal of distress. The Committee have been limited in the relief they have been enabled to afford, by the scarcity of funds; but they hope, under the present circumstances of the Imtitution, the Subscribers and the Public will assist them with the means to enlarge its useful purposes. The Committee are also desirous of drawing the attention of the numerous Subscribers and Friends of the Institution to the necessity of an 1 Asylum being erected at once, so that provision may be made for the aged and infirm, and for 1 destitute and orphan children. The Government having granted a site, and ' voted a sum of one thousand pounds (£1000) to- ; wards this object, the Committee are desirous of proceeding as soon as sufficient money can be ' raised towards the erection of a suitable building, the cost of which they have ascertained would be about two thousand pounds (£2000)— they earnestly solicit public support for to worthy an object, feeling sure that the appeal will meet with that hearty response so generously conceded in cases of this kind by all classes of the community. * Subscriptions can be plnced to the credit of the 1 Otago Benevolent Institution, Bank of New Bouth Wales, or forwarded to the office of the Society, Rattray street, Dunedin. W. M. HOPPER, Secretary.
