The splendid screw steamer Hero, which lately made one of the most rapid passages ever accomplished between England and Melbourne, anived at i*ort Oiialmers this morning completing successfully her first passage in the Melbourne and Oiago trade, iv which she is nosy placed. The Hero is a large and handsome barque-rigged steamer, built at Hull in 1861, by Messrs C. and W. Earle, iron ship builders and engine makers, aud was origiually intended for the Swedish trade. She is considered the finest sea-going steamer which has ever visited Port Otago, and is as elegantly fitted as she is substantial and proportionate in her build. Length, 248 feet; beam, 39feet; carrying capacity, 1000 tons; rate of speed from 11 to 11^ knots without sail; coal consumption, from 18 to 20 tons per diem; steerage accommodation for 221 passeagers; chief cabin 92; nominal horse-power, 150. On this passage she brings 400 tons of cargo, with about 100 passengers, a few of the number landing at the Bluff, where she was detained an Hour on Monday morning. The whole passage was made in 5| days, the vessel having left Melbourne at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, the 2nd instant, experiencing head winds at first, then light winds for three days, and subsequently a strong wind from, the southward. For some time she Went at the rate of 13 knots per hour, but the coals on board, which were shipped at the Cape, were only capable of producing a very low pressure of steam. She arrives well officered, and under a well selected commander, Capf. Logan, who has long been connected with the Melbourne passenger trade, having the command; Mr Thomson, formerly of the ships Nor' Wester and Inciana, being chief officer; and Mr Hunter, formerly head steward of the steamship Great Britain, b: ing steward. Of the vessel's passenger accommodation, the saloon and ladies cabins are particular features, the former being a spacious and elegantly furnished apaatment, with panels of polished maple wood, enclosing a number of oil paintings, including portraits of the King and Queen of Sweden, and views of Stockholm, Gothenburg and the northf-ni rife?, or of celebrated kcilities in the Swedish interior.

The barque Oregon with. 175 head of cattle from Welshpool, arrived at the Heads on Monday, and was towed up in the morning. She left on the 29th, and made the Snares on the stb, with fine weather.' Left at Welshpool, loading, the Empress Eugenic and the Bengal. The brig Union, from Hobart Town, has in the meantime anchored at the Heads, waiting orders. The ss. Omeo arrived in Hobsoa's Bay on the afternoon of the Ist inst. Captain M Lachlan reports having left. Port Chalmers at half-past four p.m. on the 23rd ult, and Bluff Harbor on the following- day, at four p.m. Experienced morlerate baffling winds untii entering Bass's Straits, and since then strong westerly winds. The Francis Henty airived on the same day. The brig Spy, for Otago, sailed from Port Phillip Heads on the Ist inst. The barquea William Buchanan and Pacific on the 22th. ult.
