VACCINATION.

(To the Editor of the Daily Times.)

Sir, —In jour issue of to-day, while noticing the want of a Public Vaccine Institution under Government supervision, you state that there is no public institution of the kind in ttunedin; and infer that the guinea-less (to coin a word) members of our community are debarred from that boon. Permit me to say, that <m my arrival in this city, towards the end of last winter, I established :m institution where all children were vaccinated without any charge; and iam happy to add, that during the summer season lar^e numbers availed themselves of the opportunity thus offered, and I was enabled from time to time to supply all medical men, who applied, with pure lymph. It may naturally be asked, why not make such an institution public through the press 1 To this I reply that the institution..was chiefly intended for the benefit of the poorer classes, and I wished to avoid even the appearance of injuring the just profits of the resident m<?dicat practitioners. In any case my motives might have been misconstrued, and I am" bound in honor, by the colleges of which I am proud to be a member, not to adopt the too frequent method of obtaining publicity, viz, the advertising, media. '■ I am. Sir, yours, &c. ! IUVID O'DoSHOGHUE. George-street, 23rd April, 18S3.

WAiiKiNO . Exercise.—The degree of walking facility possessed by each person depends in a gteat measure upon the construction of the foot. The bimes of a properly shaped foot form a double arch, being arched lengthways and sideways—although wlieu covered -with the muscle and skin, the outride of the foot, from 'the heel to the little toe, touches the tjrouud in consequence ot the arch being very low— and the weight of the body couseqneutly presses solely on those parts of the foot which form, as it ■were, the piers of this arch. Thus arrangement readers the foot more capable of bearing n heavy weight, and at the same time gives it elasticity; and for this reason we find that persous whose feet are flat, either naturally or from waring mis-shapen boots, are unable to walk any considerable distance without great fatigue., If we examine the skeleton of a foot, we find th'at-almost every bone is a lever, anil every joint or articulation a fulcrum. Whence it follows that if we wish to call into play the full force of this complicated system leverage, we must be careful in walking to place the foot on the ground in snch a manner that each part of it shall be able to perform iti proper function.—'• Boj'a Own Magazine.''
