His address will appear in to-morrow's issue. Dunedin, 13tlrFebruary, 1863. TO THE HONORABLE JOHN HYDE HARRIS, ESQ.. DUNEDIN. J SIR,— Your letter of 31st January, in which you refer to the circular appeal which bis Honor Major Itfehardson addressed to the Electors, has purposely remained unanswered till now, in order that before further communication with you, your supporters and the electors Generally, might be allo wed ample time to reflect upon the altered position in which you and they are placed, in consequence of tho appeal'of his Honor Major Richardson to which you •refer. ' ' i ■■While we fully appreciate the honorable feelinc which prompted you to refuse to become a candidate for the office of Superintendent, until his Honor 'Major Richardson made public his intentions to withdraw from public life, and while we do also admit* your subsequent straightforward and gentlemanlike conduct in allowing your supporters to reconsider and if necessary to withdraw their requisition to you, if any misapprehension existed as to his Honor Major Richardson s publicly avowed determination to retire from office; yet after maturely considering the conduct of his Honor Major Richardson, in first assuring the public, in unmistakeable terms, that he would not again seek the suffrages of the electors, while almost , simultaneously with that assurance, he issued a letter to the electors,- asking for an expression .of their j views, or to use his own language "what I shall equally understand your, expressive silence," as to ! whether he should again accept office; we Bay that after reflecting on the conduct of his Honor in this matter, and on the expressive silenoe of the electors with .reference to • his appeal, and considering th* flattering resolutions in your favor passed at a public meeting at Lake Wakatipu, we would show ourselves wanting in zeal for the prosperity of the Province were we not respectfully to press upon you the necessity of allowing yourself to remain a candidate for the office of Superintendent. We have the honor to remain Sir, Yours faithfully, John Jones Wilkinson and Dixon Harnett and Co. E. B. Cargill Andrew Moir John Howorth J. T. Shanks, Jun. A. and J. Scoular Jnmes Smith E.
