Cargill Dunedin, 27th January, 1863, /~, ENTLEMEN, —In reply to your requisition that XJ\ 1 would come forward as a candidate for the Superintendency of the Province at tlie approaching Election. 1 have much pleasure in at once_ assuring' you of my willingness to accede to your wish, especially as it appears that His Honor Major ltichardson has publicly signified his intention not again to become a candidate for the office. I shall take an early opportunity of laying before you, and the electors generally, my views on those questions -which appear to me mo3t intimately connected with the present and future prosperity of the Province, Begging that you will accept my grat'ful thanks for tlie confidence you have expressed towards me, I remain, Gentlemen, Very faithfully yours, JOHN UYDK HARRIS. To John Jones, Esq., and the othev gentlemen whose name 3 appear to the Kequisition. Dunedin, 28th January, 1863. THK-SUPERINTENDENCY. nnHK Electors are requested not to pledge themJL selves under the impression that Mr Harris will not oppose Major Richardson for the Superintendency at the ensuing election, as Mr Harris lias signified his intention of contesting ihe election. His address will appear in to-morrow's issue. Dunedin, 13th February, 18G3. TO THE HONORABLE JOHN HYDE HARRIS, ESQ.. DUNEDIH. SIR, —Your letter of 31st January, in which you refer to the circular appeal which his Honor Major ifichnrdson addressed to the hlectors, has purposely remained unanswered till now, in order that before further communication with you, your supporters and the electors generally, might be allo A-ed ample time to reflect upon the altered position in which you and they are placed, in consequence of the appeal of his Honor Mnjor Richardson to which you refer. ■ . While we fully appreciate the honorable feelinc whicli prompted you to refuse to become a candidate for the office of Superintendent, until his Honor Major Richardson made public his intentions to withdraw from public life, and while we do also ail mm your subsequent straightforward and gentlemanlike conduct iv allowing your supporters to reconsider and if necessary to withdraw their requisition to you, if any misapprehension existed as to his Honor Major Richardson's publicly nvowed determination to retire from office ; yet after maturely considering the cor.duct of his Honor Mnjor Richardson, in first assuring the public, in umnistakeable terms, that he would not as?;tin seek the suffrages of the electors, while a!mo>t simultaneously with that assurance, he issued a letter to the electors, asking for an expression of their views, or to use his own language "whai I shall equally understand your expressive silence," as to whether he should again accept office; we sny that after reflecting on the conduct of his Honor in this matter, and on the expressive silence of the electors with reference to his appeal, and considering th« flattering resolutions in your favor passed at a public meeting at Lake Wakatipu, we would show ourselves wanting in zeal for the prosperity of the Province were we not respectfully to preas upon you the necessity of allowingl yourself to remain a candidate for the office of Superintendent. We have the honor to remain Sir, Yours iaithfully, John Jones * Wilkinson and IJixon Harnett and Co. E. B. Cargill Andrew Moir , . ■ John Howorth J. T. C*hank=, Jun. A. and J.
