Solicitor: J. A. J. MacGregor.^Esq. Secretary : A. G. M'Combe, Esq. Bankers : Bank of New Zea'and. , An ample supply of pure water for th 1 use of the inhabitants of Dunedin is daily becoming a matter of urgent m;cess.iLy; and as the increasing prosperity of the OUgogod fields justifies the anticipation of a large and rapid increase" in the population -'of the totfn, this necessity assumes an importance which cannot be -ex'agaernted'. '. V The streams of water which ran through (he town, and which were once sufficient and suitable for all requirements', are how no longer capable of iiffordiug, nor is it desirable, to rely upon those sources for, a supply of this essential element of health .and cleanliness. Any undertaking which shall not, provide largely for the present and future wants of this rising city will, in the opinion of the promoters of this company be unworthy of support, nnd it is with a view to the fulfilment of tin* object that they h'tive decided lipon availing themselves of the best of several sourefs of supply which are practically inexhaustible, and in which no engineering difficulties present themselves. In order to secure the advantages of the advice and suggestions of the most practical and experienced engineers and scientific men in the Province, the promoters haye determined to offer a suitable premium lor the best devised scheme for supplying the town and suburbs with a never-failing and powerful supply c.i pure and wholesnnie water.Contractors of known ability and experience are prepared to undertake and proceed with the works as soon as practicable. It is proposed that the capital shall be £30,000 in 6,000 shares of £5 each, with pnw;r to increase the capital. A preliminary depo.vt of UU per stiare to be paid to the credit of .the Company's account with the Bank of New Zealand, upon application Jit shares; a farther payment ot 10s per slian*-on allotment; and the'subsequent calls to bn ma.le at the rate of £Iper share, and at intervals of not less than "two months. The Company will be inc-rporated under the " Joint Stock Companies Act," and be conducted by a Board of Directors to be elected at the first general meeting of the bhnreh'nlders in terms of said Act. The qualification for voting at such first General meeting shall be the payment, of £1 per share, and shareholders holding twenty-five shares shall be eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. The promoters considering that the working classes and small householders are peculiarly interested in, and will reteive great rind lasting benefit from this project, anticipate that every such inhabitant of the Town will consider it his duty to at once enrol hirh"self as a shareholder, in the Compnßy. As a medium tor the investment of Capital, no reasonable doubt can be entertained of the successor remunerative character of tlw scheme, in Englandj in Scotland, and iv the adjacent colonies, similar undcr'akings have Droved most profitable to the share--holders, and in a sanatory and pecuniary point of viriw the advantages which the inhabitants of Dunedin will derive from a superabundant supply of pure water cannot be estimated till actually within the reach of every individual In the single item of Insurance which now can only iv certain circumstances be effected, and nt a ruinous rate,. it . will benefit the owners of property by a reduction of present rates of premium, from 00s and 55s per cent to about 10s and 5.-; per cent. In consequence of a similar underlaying having been inroduced into Mebourne, an extensive fire there is now almost an in possibility, while during the period that Melbourne -vas without .its present ample supply of water, the loss of property by fire amounted to a much larger sum than would have constructed several water-Works of immense magnitude, and if immediate steps are not t.iken to prevent ?uch a calamity as an extensive fire in this tlik'klj,1 populated town, it Kay devastate more property in one night than the entire capital of the Cotn| any now about to bi- established. In these re-peets it is iuipos-sible to estimate the value of th<' works which it i-. designed to construct here; hut apart tlierefuwu, and on sanatory mid economical coiiNiiJerutiniis. it is hr-iievrri that an iiji.jjlil .snp|i y nt-pnn* vv t'er perm atviig the tmvn • of <ulfiiie t nr en. yn-'d imp .r.iiKCe i ■ iuduta tlie (iuvern ment ami Uiu public mo?t lieailily to support this uudd taking.
