The cause of the recent murder of the gaol warder is reported to have been instigated by a desire to obtain a quarter's pay which the deceased had in his pocket.

Highway Robbery.—On Wednesday night last information reached the Ararat police that a highway robbery under arms had been committed at a place called Geelcng "Fiat, near Beaufort, on a man named John M'Cowan, under the following circumstances : —M'Cowan was returning on horseback from Beaufort to Mr Russell's station, when he was met by a man, who struck him on the back of the head with a stick, and ordered hiia off his horse. The robber also presented a pistol, and threatened to blow his brains out if he did "not give up his money. He then searched M'Cowan, and rifled his pockets of a silver watch and a purse containing seven LI notes and some silv<r. The miscreant was accompanied by a companion, who was riding a dark bay horse, and holding a second horse, while the deed was being committed. The man who attacked M'Cowan is described as twenty-five or thirty years of age, five feet e'even inches high, stout built, brown whiskers, worn all round the face, ha<t on grey trousers and coat, and panama hat; rode a chestnut horse.— Ararat Advertiser, December 5.

_ Thf^ Occupation Licenses.—Some farmers living in the Sandon district have complained to us of the dilatoriness which characterises the Government Survey of the land held under Occupation Licenses. These farmers availed themselves of the opportunity of obtaining land contiguous to their holdings \viih the option of purchasing such land at the upset price, when it should be surveyed and offered for sale. They say the Government are rigid enough for requiring that the rent should be paid quarterly, but they appear in no hurry to have the land surveyed. This is unjust to the occupant, as it keeps him in a state of suspense, defeats the object he had in view in taking up the land, and takes from his pocket, should the delay be persisted in, more than the land would actually be sold for. Thefartner3 in question have been informed that the local surveying staff deem it not well at present to attempt the necessary survey. We are not able to pronounce an opinion on the subject, but would draw the attention of the local authorities to it, as in all probability the grievance is not confined to the above mention'.d district.—M, A, Mail, §th Pec,
