TOKOMAIRIRO. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

I. • • September IS. Through the courtesy of Mr. Jones, the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, in this district, I was the other day favoured with a view of a splendid specimen of gold obtained somewhere in this neighbourhood. The specimen consisted of twelve ounces of large nuggetty gold, more like the Waipori gold than any other, bat much heavier than the generality of that, and mixed with quartz. One of the pieces weighed upwards of 3£ dwtjj., and four others, taken at random, weighed each upwards of I£. dwts. It was brought to tho bank by four men, whostated that they- had obtained it in the vicinity of Tokomairiro, but refused to divulge the locality, only saying that they could get plenty more where that came from. From its color and general appearance I should say that it was richer gold than most of that obtained iii-Otago. Mr. Jones has kept it separate from any other, in order to have it assayed. , _ The recent agitation in this district on the subject of the main road to the Dunstan Diggings, is likely to= lead to some practical issue. I believe | that a letter has been received from the Govern- | merit, stating that they are fully alive: to the advantage of connecting that field witli the Tiiapeka diggings by a main line of road, and thus making one escort serve for" both places. They stated, also thaivAS soon cas. one< of the. Survey staff could ; be spared for the purpose, he .would be sent 'to survey and = mark; cut a line of road; All the draysftbafc left this !to explore the road have been successful^ and have reached the Dunstari with comparatively sligl\t difficulty. ont ot tjieir own ppcket.% One case^l have heard of-wjiere a party who had promUed-jGI 10a. offered 10s. 63. to compromise-the matter, saj injj that he would give two guineas next year. This i Magnanimous offer was however, rejected by the, astonished steward. , ■ At the Episcopal Church, last-Sunday, there was a Collection* for the Lancashire itelief JTaud, when the sum of £5 wns collected. Several etises of breach of the Slaughter House Ordinance have occurred recently in this distiict; andfiues ha\e beea jnfiicted. There, have been two special meetings of tlie Bench for the parj^se of granting- slaughtor-liouse licenses; yet many parties have neglected to apply for licenses; the fee for which is merely nominal, i.e. 2s. 6d. lobserve that tlie .Education Beard recently resolved to'erect the uew schoolbouse* in this district of brick. It is to be hoped that tliey will take care to have a stone or. eeraorit foundation, as the bricks made here arc of such a porous nature that they draw the" clamp from the ground if placed in contact with it, in the most extraordinary manner, and in a short time completely give way. Several houses and chimneys built here I of them have given way dnring the winter, in consequences of there Jnot being a foundation impervious to damp.
