Capt. ■ Ruhl' report? having lain at the settlement on the island for ten" d.iys'of very-fine weather, and in the embarkation. of his stock experienced no difficulty, 'though; at certain -seasons, the locality is a very inconvenient one for shipping, receiving, or discharging cargo. Shortly previous to the Warren Goddard's visit the Governor of New South Wales had been at •the island, and, rich -though it is in natural resources, it was calculated, according to inquiries made by him, that not more than 35acres.are under cultivation, including the:grass paddocks for stock. In other respects Capt. Buhl describes the island to be shamefully neglected by the inhabitants, who are .principally Pitcaim Islanders, and descendants of the ' Bounty1 mutineers] and a more productive soil or more delightful climate he has seldom seen in the same latitudes. ' The good buildings which had been erected for the'original convict inhabitants of the island are fast going to decay, and the roads con- » -structed- throughout the; island by the convicts are also much neglected.: There being no custom-house or customs officials;on the island,, the WardeniGoddard's:clearance'was signed by the Superintendent and a magistrate, and witnessed by the chaplain: The cattle brought by the Warren Goddard are very ; fiue iStock, and are landed in good condition. 1 . i - - In addition to our previous report of the Salcombe Castle, Capt. James reports that, some distance to the. northward of Port Otago, he sighted a large! ship,' " beating up. As a very strong current to the northward has been felt lately along the coast, it is probable" that the vessel sighted has been the Abbot Laurence, which left the BlufF about 12 days ago, and has not yet arrived, here.: rlSomei anxiety has been felt!about - -the Abbot Lawrence,-on board of-which-there were several passengers'ibr Othgo,:but as the wind was off ;;'j the toJhep departure, from the Bluff, und'-thel>TVeather;.'3omewhat severe, it is very likely 'ii that ;sheihas been obliged to rnn to the north-east,, being alight ship, and having with her strong northward current. Capt. James reports also that, about

fifty miles to the northward, he passed a large spar, with some rigging attached. The programme of the Port Chalmers regatta was completed to-day, when the match between secondclass sailing yachts took place. The match had been postponed in consequence of the want of wiiuVou the : different days appointed for the competition, but today it blew half a gale, and the boats or yachts ontered had their sails better filled than they have been for some time past. Three yachts started—the Zambia,' Kblaua, and Water Lily. The Zambia, owned by Southgate and Mason, took the lead at the start, and kept.it well throughout, coming in a long way ahead .of the others under a smacking breeze. The Water Lily had the misfortune to get aground, which interfered with the otherwise good run which she would have made. A fourth boat had been entered, but she did not sail, and the prizes were accordingly awarded In the following order—Zambia, Ist; Eblana, 2nd ; Water Lily, 3rd. -O

Ship AsnoßE. —Early yesterday morning a telegram was received by the chief harbor master, inforniint; him that a ship was on shore in the west channel. It proved to be the American ship Simoda, which sailed from the bay during Saturday last. It also stated that the pilot schooner Rip had gone to_ her assistance, as also the pilots' whale boat, in tow of the steamer Havilah; she also signaliscdforsteam tugs. The steamers Sophia and Black Eagle, with the chief harbor master, left the bay and proceeded during the forenoon ■to her assistance. She was on the, bank situated S.K by B. of the lightship, inside No. 14 buoy, or the second white buoy from the entrauca of the channel, and was lying very quiet. Should 4he weather continue fine; it was generally supposed that she would be got off during hist night.— Argus, May 2Cth. The Altona, from Leith, which arrived at Adelaide on the 21st instant, spoke the American ship Indian, from Calcutta to Melbourne, on the 13th instant, Go days out, in lat. 3Udeg. 50 mm. S., and long. 122deg. SOmin. E.— Argus, May 26th. We understand that the Caroline, recently sunk at the e;iat coast, has broken up, a considerable quantity of her stores and coals having been got out. The company's launch, used to ship coal, &c, has come on shore, but is litila damaged. The Native Youth had arrived, and was loading with coals, and may be looked for in town in the course of a day or two. — Hobuvt Town Mercury, May 17th. "
