TBe Kumara arrived in Dunedin on May 28th from New York, via Lyttel • ton, and sailed on June 2 for Melbourne. Among the cargo landed in Dunedin was a consignment of kid leather, consisting of eighteen cases. On opening these at the wharf to-day it was discovered that the eight eases contained bricks and stones only, the original contents, valued at £2500, having been pillaged. WANGANUI. June 7. The Court of Inquiry into the loss of the steamer Aorere found that there were three causes —viz., the vessel getting into a leaking condition by working loose in heavy weather, the pump not being fitted with a proper screen, and the captain committing an error of judgment in not seeking shelter either at Kapiti Island or in Queen Charlotte Sound. Other than this error ,tlierc was no neglect or incompetency on the part of Captain Crotty, whose certificate was returned. No order as to costs was made. IN VER CAR GILL. June 7. A young man named Herbert Tinker, a recent arrival from Home, missed a step in descending a steep staircase and fell to the bottom, sustaining a fractured skuil. Hp died without regaining consciousness. Deceased, who had four years' war service, had relatives in Oamarn.
