An important decision was icached bv the Conference ot the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, when, on the recommendation of -the Aitclv land branch, it was unanimously resolved that the British veterans of former wars should bo admitted as active members ot the Association. In support ot the. remit it was urged that, now that the soldiers of the <jieat wai had had an opportunity of. being topot rated it was only right that- a. cordial welcome should he extended to the British veterans of other wars. Mr E. F. Andrews (Auckland) said that al! South African veterans who were not able to take, part in the great war. would- bo proud to wear tlio bridge ot the Association, and an opportunity should be accorded them to do so. DUNEDIN- June 4. The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Winter Show closed to-night, after running for four days. WANGANUI, .Ituie 4. A nautical inciuiry opened to-day in connection with the loss of the steamer Aorere on Rangitikei beach, on May 23rd last. The evidence was generally on the lines of the facts already known. The steamer was bound from Blenheim to Wanganui.. In. Cook Strait tempestuous, weather was encountered The vessel leaked badly, and the coal gave out. The master tried to sail the steamer, but eventually, for the safety of the crew, he decided to beach her. It was stated that the master had made every endeavor te save his ship, but the vessel was helpless when the engines stopped: •Other evidence tendered was to the effect that the vessel was recently on the slip. The police have been notified that the dead body of a young man named Cyril Hughes" was found in the bush, near Kaeo. with a gimshot wound in the abdomen and another in the head. He had been missing since Sund when he went away alone on a shooting expedition. The .theory, is that tlie abdominal wound was accidental, and that the head wound was self-inflicted to end his sufferings, as no help was forthcoming. FEILDING, June 4. Mr G. N. Shannon, Government Customs expert (retired) and a prominent settler in the Waituna district, died this morning. His - wife predeceased him by six years. He leaves a large grownup family.
