(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 3. General Sir Wm. Birdwood arrives in Christchurch on Monday night. He will spend a fortnight in Canterbury and Otago, visiting Dunedin, Invercargill, and Queenstown. and returning to Christchurch. He will then proceed overland to the West Coast, Nelson, and Blenheim, and will return to Wellington. He will go to Wairarapa and Napier. motor to Taupo and Rotorua. and then proceed to Auckland. After a few days there he will leave for New Plymouth. and will return to Wellington, visiting various towns en route. He will leave Wellington for England by the Arawa about July 20. In accordance with the decision arrived at last night, pickets from the Drivers' Union were on duty this morning near the Thorndon Station endeavoring to persuade members of their union or any unionists that they knew not to attend the Otaki races. The pickets report that their efforts were very satisfactory, not more than 12 persons failing to respond to tlicir representations. CHRISTCHURCH, Tunc 3. I The Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's annual winter show, which opened on Tuesday. has attracted a large influx of visitors, and the attendances have been large.for three days, tbe receipts totalling £llO9 9s. Today's takings amounted to £583 2s 6d, which is the highest for one_ day in the life of the Society. It is estimated that 1-5.000 people visited the show to-day. The exhibition will close on Friday night. BLENHEIM. June 3. The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce to-night considered a letter from Mr .T. A. Perano, of Tory ' Channel, pointing out that Australia was imposing an increased tariff on the importation of all fish oils from one penny to eightpence per gallon. This would seriously hamper the New whaling industry, as Australia was its chief market* The Chamber resolved to write to the Minister of Customs to communicate with, the Commonwealth authorities with a view to having the tariff reduced, or n preferential duty placed on New Zealand oil..
