AN ANGLICAN MISSION.

(Special to the Press.') AUCKLAND, May 31. An Anglican City Mission was inaugurated yesterday, wheji the Rev. Jasper Calder (whose name has been pro- ' minently before the public of late) was inducted as missioner. In a. forcible address, delivered after the induction in St. Mary's Cathedral, STr Calder explained the aims and objects of the. mission. He said that the people could lie divided into four classes —the devout man, who was the backbone of the Church; the Pharisee, who used the Church and his religion as a cloak for insincerity and evil; the man who was what he might term "libera]." who lived a. decent and a clean life. Out who was indifferent to and out of touch with church and religion; and the "wastrel" man of evil life, who was utterly without religion. Iho objects of the mission were 'to get into touch with those of class 3; to reawaken in them an interest in spiritual things, and to win them Hack to allegiance to the Church; and. further, to stretch out a helping hand |to those of class 4. in order that the reproach might no longer be heard that thev remained in ignorance and degradation without any effort being-made on their behalf; that no longer might it be said that while much was done in sending missionaries and money to the' heathen abroad, nothing, was done for the vicious and the isrnorant at home. The methods to be adopted to attract those to whom the appeal was directed, he said, might be a littl« unorthodox and unusual. Personally- he rejoiced at the opportunity to work upon lines a little outside the orthodox methods of the Church in that direction; but once the effect succeeded, and they were attracted, the work would be all in the direction of winning them to the teacnmcrs of the Church. The mission did. riot aim to attract regular churchgoers from their parish churches. • Such were neither invited, nor would they bo welcomed; but he appealed to them, to send, or sometimes to take, to the mission any of those to whom its appeal was directed, if it were in any "way possible.; ■ .
