The police received information that a distressing occurrence befell a Maori at the scrub-cutters' camp, Waihui, which resulted in the cleath from shock, following on. severe burns of a girl named Tawai Wie Hone, aged 16 years.. It appears that the family retired' to rest on Sunday, leaving a fire burning—a 'common practice, with Natives—and the' night - was very cold. About 1 a.m. the father suddenly roused up to find the tent in flames.. The occupants Tiad treat difficulty in escaping with their lives, all being more or less severely burned, especially the girl, about body and face. She was attended by Dr Somerville. an'l Nurse Nafra that day. but died on Mo-idav. The father, mother, and two children were; brought to the Wairoa Hospital for treatment.
