DEATH OF DR MORRISON.

May 31The death is aunounced of Dr George Ernest Morrison, political adviser to the Chinese President. (Times Service.) Received June 1. at 1.5 a.m. LONDON", May 30. Dr Morrison died at Sidmouth after a lingering illness. He was occupied to the last in carrying oat work for the Chinese Government from his sick room. Dr Morrison was l>oni at Geelong, Victoria, on February 4. 1562. He. was educated at Geelonjj; College and Edinburgh University, and graduated M.D; of the latter in 1895 (M.S. in 1887). travels were numerous and dating. He walked across Australia from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Melbourne in ISS2-S3. In October. 18S3. he W3« speared by the natives in NN e w Guinea, and for nearly a year earned the spear-head in his body until it was i extracted in Edinburgh. JLn 1894 he crossed overland from Shanghai to Rangoon. As special correspondent of The Time* Ire undertook some_ important'travels in China and Siberia_ (189697>. and during the period of diplomatic tension in China (IS9S) frequently sent Home messages to his paper from which even tfte Government was fd a <} to draw its information. His overland journey of 1894 was described by him in his volume "An Australian in China." He was in Peking during the j siege of Legations. June-August. .1900, where lie. was reported to have been killed. He was present at the triumphal' entrv in Port Arthur, January, 1905. In "1907 he crossed China from Peking to tin? He rode- from Honan City.ijt Central China, across Asia to Andijan in Russian Turkestan. a distance of 3750 miles, iii 175 days. 1910. He held first-class Order Excellent Crop (China). He came to New Zealand in 191 S. For some years prior to his death he acted as political adviser to theChitiese President.
