RECENT TROUBLES. By Telegraph. (Special to the Oamaru Mail.) WELLINGTON, May 31. The complaint from Auckland .regardirig the neglect of the Immigration Department to care for a batch of Imperial soldiers who arrived under the overseas settlement scheme appears tp be due to the fact that the New Zealand officials were not notified, ns is supposed to be the rule, of their probable arrival. The Hon. V/. Noswortliy, the Minister in Charge of Immigration, informs your correspondent that everything that his department • can do in the way of finding employment and giving advice to tho immigrants is done, and an officer visits erery direct overseas steamer for this purpose. The recent trouble was not ■ duo to laxity on the part of the New I Zealand Immigration Department, which had asked to be advised of tho probable arrival of ex-service Englishmen. "The best system of all," the Minister added, "is our nominated system. lam getting a tremendous number of inquiries from people in the Dominion, who wish to nominate friends in the Old Country. These are reliable people, who would not nominate persons . likely to become » failure in the Dominion. Although I have been approached with a suggestion that this system of nomination should be done away with, tho Government intends to adhere to its policy, because, after looking into the whole matter; it is satisfied that it proniises best for the country in eeeuring the right class of people, who . can be absorbed with the greatest ease.".
