KoWrt Semple. late member for Wellington South, souuht to recover £oO damages from -Svdiiey John J-ap-tord for slander, allotted to have been .-poken bv defendant to Waiter Hadley in DecernVr last. It was alleged that Sapsfortl had Mated, before the Par Itaiuentary election, that Somple had kept « house of ill-fame under license in Brisbane, and had asked Hadley whether he would vote tor such a man. Air O'Leary appeared for the defendant, and on his behalf tendered an unreserved apology to Mr Somple. He said the statement had been made during the heat of an argument without thought of the seriousness of the :i'l>> cation. Defendant admitted frankly that there was no justification forsiicli -'atement. Mr Sempl" had aci-optod the apology, and agreed to take a comparatively small .-.urn. merely sutii*'>.-i:t to cover expenses.
