DOMINION NEWS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON,. April 29. The charge against Voltaire, the French pugilist, or landing in JNew Zealand without authority, was dismissed, ~the; Magistrate holding., that a document sighed -by a military officer in Australia', produced by the defendant, came within the definition of a passport. James. Newberry, charged with the attempted murder of Mrs Cooper and her sister, Miss Skjoth, was committed for trial. The evidence was that he was engaged- to Mrs Cooper at one time, but the engagement was broken' off. During. the'night of April Bth, Newberry got into her house and as- \ saulted both women with an iron bar. ! The medical evidence was that 'Mrs Cooper was the more seriously injured of. the two. Such a weapon was just as likely to kill as to injure. Newberry had been severely .wounded at the front, and had been in hospital practically all the ' time since' he returned. AUCKLAND, April 28. The Conciliation Council has been engaged for the past two days with the disputes- filed by the Clerks' Union, the other parties being the gas companies and implement manufacturers. "I am perfetcly sure, and am certain it will arrive, in stating that Australia can be brought within five days of London," said Mr G. Holt Thomas yesterday, when giving his views on comemrcial communication by air to the Association of British Chambers of Commerce at the Connaught Rooms. It was only a question of flying in' stages at 100 miles an hour,- said Mr Thomas, to accomplish this Australian mail service. ' '• ■:.'■_.. He calculated that the cost of conveying a letter from London to Australia would be about 2s, and, as the cable rate was 3s per word, there would be an immense gain in this respect alone.
