OAMARU v.-MEADOWBANK

Tile last ■ of * the. Association."' fixtures was played yesterday between the (Jamarn and .Meadowbank teams. Each., had to its credit the same number of points, and each had.defeated the other once, so that the fate of the Shield huns on: the result of this meeting, whicH* went in favor of the Oainaru- eiub., The Association had arranged for the match tlie" Hill,- and this' was perhaps partly the;reasori foi- the-.vety mediocre display of tennis all round:: Whatever; the cause, the fact remains that the Way was uninteresting and.of •a- much "fower standard than might ha.ve been expected. There , was : n«';» single bright display on the men's side. The-first-double between Dickson and; Sumpter and K. .and' J. Fairiiltoh was a puny affair ivhiich the, Meadowbank pair could , have won if they had been content to allow their opponents to make, the' mistakes. Sumpter was weak and ineffective, and too often interfered with Dickson, whom indispoaitoin prevented: from showing his best form. K. Familton was the only one in the double who was up to his usual, standard, and he would have pulled the match off but for the too prevalent mistakes of his partner. The.most interesting game of the day was the first combined between Miss Miller and K. Familton and Miss M'Mullan arid Dickson. The Meadowbank pair took the first five games while their opponents were finding their form,' but Dickson and Miss M'Mullan played a fine, uphill game, and, throwing 'nothing away, led at 9.8. 1 The; game was stopped at 10 all owing to the darkness making further play impossible. A surprise came; in the defeat of two of Meadowbank's ladies in the singles. Miss Davies beat Miss Franklin, and Miss Humphries beat Miss Edwards, who has not been defeated in these fixtures for'many years, and if she did not play" quite up to her best form, yet Miss Humphries put up a good performance in- beating, her. It was these two losses that decided the destiny of the Shield; Which, after the match,' was handed 'ovjetf by Mr H. P. S. Familton to Dickson, on behalf of the Oamaru Club. Mr Familton also presented, the junior banner to Mr Mollison for the Hill Club. The scores are:— ; - -—Men's Singles.—V . M. O. A. Gibb v. 6. Sumpter 6 9 K. Familton v. S. Dickson ... ... 6 'J J.
