FAREWELL SOCIAL AT KPAPAKAIO.

On Friday evening last a social was held in the'hall at Papakaio. as a farowell and complimentary social to M -and Mrs Charles Whyte, very old re : sidents of the district. -The night was fine, and. there was a,, good turn-out -)l friends from various parts. The younger ones danced the hours away, win iO those not so inclined joined in game;* of cards, etc.. in the adjoining, rotim. During a break in the {Tlmeing Mr W. Gardiner, on behalf of the residents, presented the. guests of the • evening with two very comfortable easy chairs. In a linmo'rous and reminiscent speech he referred to the* many good qualities of the .recipients as settlers, neighbors, and •as workers for the public good. Mr P. Dunne, also spoke in complimentary terms of the guests, and Mr Wh.vte suitably and feelingly replied. Supper, bountiful in : quantity and excellent in quality, provided by the ladies, was then handed round. 'Thi> music for the dunce, provided by Mr arid Mrs ,7. Mackenzie, was excellent, ns usual, whilo Mr J. Why te efflcientlv acted as M.C. The departing eounle tako with them the best wishes of all.
