OAMARU PAINTERS' DISPUTE.

The Conciliation Council sat. at the Courthouse yesterday afternoon to deal with the Oaniaru painters' dispute. Iv'r W. H. Hagger, Conciliation Commissioner. presided, and Messrs H. L. l'"a in 11 toil. M. .J. Hanley, and J. A. Colenso acted as assessors for the employers and Messrs It. B recti, If. Curshaw, and J. Forrester for the Union. The employers refused to agree to the hours of work or wages provided in the demand. Finally a- complete agreement was arrived at, the principal alterations from the old.award being:— Journeymen's wages were increased to Is 7{d per hour, plus bonus of 4Jd per hour. Overtime was increased to time .and a half for the first three hours, and thereafter double time. The country rate was increased from 3s to 4s. Apprentices' wages were also increased, and now stand: First year, 15s per week; second year, 20s; tnird year, 255; fourth year, 30s, fifth year, 50s. Apprentices' overtime rates advanced from Gd and Is to Is and Is 6d respectively. The employers also agreed to allow workers one penny a mile bicycle allowance. These conditions are to come- into operation on the first- day of April, 1920. and to continue in operation until the. 31st day of December, 1921. All other clauses were in ilie terms of the existing award.
