It was decided to carrv out this intention. a His Worship mentioned . that the amount of growth on frontages m the streets was very marked, and lie thought that it might be advisable to have such parts of the streets tarred and sanded. , His Worship also mentioned that the police station in Thames street had been vacated, and it- was important that- the Council should come to a .satisfactory solution how to deal with this property . Councillor Rodman thought that the best thing the Council could do would be to sell the buildinas for removal. Councillor Cooney thought that the buildings would not- be. much good. Councillor Miller said that the had iiow cost the town some £3OOO, and it- was a- business proposition. Councillor Sinclair thought that the site was. the most suitable one for a memorial. v -. Councillor Calder thought the would never have n value for business purposes. The town was in need ot a« place suitable for open-air meetings. He thought that Councillor Swinard's sug-' Cfft-io-n mooted some time ago to build a rotunda and use the site for a .memorial was the best- .one yet put foiwnrd. , • ... His Worship said that Councillor Pwinnvd's proposal was merely to take the front portion of the site for a. memorial. . , Councillor Forrester thought that the town nm?t look to the future, and the <-;.ti-- might, later be valuable, for business purposes. , Councillor Suadden said he thought that it would be well to endeavor to obtain the old courthouse and make a, crrrccnt. utilising a portion of the ground for business purposes. Councillor Swinard explained that the band rotunda was merely a detail in his scheme. Councillor Miller thought that it was a matter that the Finance Committee, should take up seriously. There were complaints now of heavy rates, and the Council should economise and derive revenue from every possible source. When those sites were negotiated 'for it was anticipated to make it a revenue-pro-ducing scheme. Councillor Cooney had confidence that the town was going to expand and he would he sorry to see so valuable a- site 1.1 ass out of the hands of the Council. Equally suitable sites for a memorial could be obtained in a- less valuable place. Councillor Rodman thought that there was no suggestion that the sito be altogether forfeited to, the public, .but that the public raise the- amount to reimburse the Council for the cost of the property. Councillor Deal said that, there were several schemes - mooted, and one was to build a hall on the site. There was need for a. hall and such a build ilia would be revenue-producing. A hall % there could be used as an art..gallery, •lie hoped that the Council could gct its money back afc the least. Councillor Forrester thought that whatever memorial was built should be non-utilitarian. His Worship thought that a careful survey of the scheme should be entered into. If the site was used for a memorial the amount of about £6OOO would be recmired to recoup the Council and build .the memorial. The Committee set up should, first decide what is to be. done with the buildings and report. Councillor Calder thought it was time that something was done to make the | fountain in the Gardens workable. Councillor Forrester thought that a. new. drain would be necessary: . The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee with power to act. - "Hanoiness is Life—Everything."— Stanus. . But win. can bp happy when a cold stuffs up the head, a cough tears each throat-membrane, and chest trouble tortures the lungs - "Why, no one!
