After elaborating the Nationalist policy at the Town Hall, Mr Hughes retired to his hotel. A crowd of Diggers assembled at the hotel, apparently" with the object of demanding a cash gratuitv. When Mr Hughes refused to appear. the men attempted to burst open the doors of the hotel. A melee 'ensued, in which the police were stoned. One constable was injured and was taken to hospital.
