. Mr 1 lughcs at the I*ord Mayor's dinner said the decision of the people on the referendum would profoundly affect the future. The refusal of a free jwople to make sacrifices to de'fend their freedom would lie used in disproof »t t!t<* wisdom of submitting i_Tk>;it national issues to the people. Something more than the question of compulsory reinforcements was _ involved •ni the referendum. Tlie strikes and upheavals experienced are manifestations of a 1 deliberate policy aimed to destroy society as it now exists. Mr Hughes concluded that if the Government nynd it impossible to proceed with its present policy he would anpeal to the people in such a way that not a section but the whole Parliament would come bekore them.
