FOOTBALL.

PRESENTATION OF BANNERS'. Another successful season of Rugby football under the auspices' of the North Otago Rugby Football Sub-Union-has been completed, and yesterday the opportunity* was taJken to present the banners to the successful teams in the junior competition and primary schools competition. At 2 o'clock the President of the Union, Mr T. E. Doran, with Messrs C. F. Herbert, J. Reid', W. Couper, and! J. Gerrie (secretary), members of the Committee! of Management, visited Waitaki High School, the team from which school carried off the Junior honors.

The boys gathered in the gymnasium, where the Rector, Mr F. Milner, addressed the boys and' stressed the im-; jjortance 1 of sport and the part it played! ii. the life of a nation. The boys at the school did not come for education alone. Recreation played a large part in the education of the boys, and one of the chief sports was the virile game of Rugby. He! said' it was an honor that the Committee of Management should visit the School that had won .the banner. It was the revival of a custom which had been allowed to drop of late years. Mr Doran, in presenting the banner to - the team, congratulated' them on? their: win and stated that the Union owed a debt to the School team for their sportsmanlike attributes. They played the game in the right manner and spirit. Whenever the boys were selected: to play on the Park they were always sure of a. good attendance, keen! interest, and a satisfactory contest. Messrs Reid, Herbert, Gerrie, _ and Couperj also spoke, and the captain of the rteam replied in appropriate terms on bolialf of the other members of the fifteen. —South School. — . At 2.40 o'clock the Committee paid a visit to the South School to present the .Primary Schools banner which had been, won by the school. The boy pupils of the oth and 6th Standards assembled and Mr W. M'Laren, headmaster, presided. The President of the Union made the presentation, and congratulated ther. boys oil their win and' referred to the? assiduity of their training and the high, standard of pTay maintained. The other members of the Committed also spoke in commendatory terms, and" Mr M'Laren replied on behalf of the successful team. .
