OUR FIRE WASTE.

The Wellington people arc credited with having the best equipped fire brigade in New Zealand, and do not lot the men get cold for lack of oxorci6G. Well-meaning but more or loss stupid persons brought the brigade out 28 times last year on wild-goose chases, and 29 false alarms were given. Tho malicious and careless uso of wax matolios and candles continues to caus* manv fires despite the warnings of Inspector Hugo and various municipal superintendents. For the year 1910-11 matches dropped carelessly wore blamed for 23 fires and candles erring among curtains and other inflammable material accounted for 13. This year candles again claim 13 and matches 27. Public opinion is still very lax on fires throughout New Zealand, and the world's record fire waste is maintained ■at 10s a year per head of population.
