WAIHI STRIKE. (Per Press Association.) Thames, June 12. In connection with the YV-aihi miners'' strike the Thames Aimers' Union executive met to consider the application of the Karangahake branch to vote a sum towards assisting the strikers. The-, position is somewhat peculiar. The Thames Minors' Union is registered under the Arbitration Act, anel has just entered into an agreement drawn up in friendly conference with -the mining companies. The Karangahake branch iii the union sympathises with the strike, while the majority of the Thames miners oppose it. Karangahake favors joining the Federation, of Labor, but Thames opposes this. At a meeting it was pointed out that there was a doubt whether the Thames Union, being registered, under the Act could abet <i strike or assist strikers. After discussion the meeting decided to take a, legal opinion. The meeting was not ope.n to the press.

AVaihi, June 12. The town still maintains a quiet npnearance.

The forthcoming confernce is not looked forward to with a great degree of hope in the matter of a settlement, as the latter seems impossible; in fact, one of the conditions is that the mineowners absolutely refuse to discuss the differences between the two unions.

It is understood that- the first general strike pay was made yesterday. A mass meeting of single men was held tin's morning under the auspices of the AVaihi Miners' Workers' Union. The chairman, in explaining the business of the meeting, said that it had been- convened with a view of inducing more single men to take an active part in the strike. He pointed out in this connection that there were only two single- men on the committee or subcommittees at the present time. The meeting, he said, had also been called for the purpose of confirming the. Strike Committee's recommendation re strike pay. The recommendation was thatsingle men. receive 15s a week, anel married men with two or less children 205,married men with three children 255, and men with, four or more children 30s. The union has decided to pur T chase stores and sell to strikers at cost price. The chairman advised single men who could not make arrangements to board at the rate of 15s a week, to club together anel "batch." It was resolved that single men accept 15s ai week strike nay until further notice. Nothing was decided regarding the committee's'desire as to single men. taking a more active part In connection with, the strike. The meeting, as usual, was held in -camera. Pickets seemed to be well in evidence, no doubt with a view of locating the origin of press reports. The executive of the Thames Union decided to contribute £2O towards the strike, fund. The union is registered under the Arbitration Act, and consulted a solicitor before making the donation. Christehurch. June 12. At a meeting of the Canterbury Laborers' Union, held last night, Air E. Howard gave a full account of the cause of the present.trouble at Wa.ihi nncl Beef ton, and the following resolution was adopted: "That a voluntary levy of 10 per cent, on members' earnings be struck, the f'Mids so raised to be forwarded to the Federation of Labor, anel.to be ear-marked to assist tho wives and chilel'-en of miners who are out of work at AVaihi and Reefton.
