MAKING ROOM FOR A LIBRARY. [By Elfxtbic Telegraph—Copyright. | (Pek Press Association.) Received June 1. at 11.15 p.m. Sydney. Juno 1. The State Government, at the r-nd »? the present term, expiring in a month, has decided to resume possession of Government House at Sydney, which, ■during the past ten years, has been lent to the Federal Government as a residence for the Governor-General. One of the reasons for the step is that it is a magnificent building, and the grounds are used only for a short period each vear, but the chief factor is the necessity for finding room for many thousands of books belonging to the public libraries, which they are at present compelled to stow in such a manner thatthev are inaccessible to readers. It is proposed to transform the viceregal residence into a national museum of natural history, arts. etc.. while the grounds will be converted into public pardons. It is also proposed, when the Mitchell library is completed., to demolish the present public library and Government Printing Office and erect lame buildings for public departments. The decision to resume Government House will crime as a surprise to the Federal Government. As this means making other provisions for housing the Governor-General at Sydney. Mr Hughes will confer with the Government to-morrow on the matter.
