NOTES.

The Kowhai is time-tabled to load at | Oamaru on Tuesday next for Napier and Gisborne inner harbors. The Corinna is due at Oamaru on Sunday night to load on her uaual northern run. A number of workmen were engaged at Port Chalmers yesterday putting the stand-by ship Monra in sea-going order. This was regared as an indication that she might be required to proceed to the Islands in connection with the Tofua striking a reef there. The reduced oversea winter freights for produce came into operation yesterday. The Star says that some observers at Port Chalmers saw in that the reason for the Paparoa being so busily engaged as she was vesterday morning taking in frozen ana other produce. Reporting the grounding of the Moeraki in the Derwent on May 18, the Hobart Mercury says: —The vessel entered the river at 8.30 a.m. at reduced speed, and Captain J. Bolls had great difficulty in finding his way np the estuary. At Howrah the fog got denser, and the captain appears to nave lost his bearings altogether, as after the space of about half an hour the vessel slowly and almost silently grounded on the beach at BeDerive, just below the Bluff. Jnst then the fog lifted, and Captain Rolls was able to see where he was. The order was given "full astern," and the ship drew off as unostentatiously as she had gone on the sandbank. The passengers did not evince any signs of uneasiness ; in fact, there was nothing to warrant any harm. Fortunately the spot on which the vessel grounded was si sandy spit. The Moeraki was turned wharfwards, and a little time later was berthed alongside Prince's wharf.
