THE COVENROR AND THE TERRITORIALS.

NOT AN AGGRESSIVE SCHEME.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, May 27. A large gathering of military* officers assembled : at'the Ciiibrooms last night to welcome the Governor. Colonel Wolfe extended a warm welcome to his Excellency as a seasoned soldier who had fought for the Empire and gained distinction, in the field!. Lord Islington said- bur military organisation, opened a: new chapter in the history, of..New Zealand ,and also formed a firm and 1 solid foundation for the universal, effort of the whole Empire. He congratulated the Dominion on having as.Commandaut General Godley, air'officer ; possessing three grea; qualities—tact, ability, and the esteem necessary in a successful soldier, the officers at headquarters and in the various districts also showing much ability in, their, work. The scheme was now iri 'mid-s'fcreani, and gave every prospect of success. Old soldiery said the training : given the Territorials" was quite inadequate as compared with that of Continental soldiers, but if. the Territorials thoroughly/applied themselves then in "national disaster they would be susceptible of very "rapid advancement. He was a great believer in 'the Territorial scheme, which was not an aggressive military scheme, but the moslt' peaceful of all arrangements that could, be made, under any system. He promised the officers all the support he coujd give while Governor, and hoped they would keep, in. constant touch with him, and come to him in full confidence in the Garrison Officers' Club or in camp.
