Jupe-Culotte Village.
In tlie Swiss Canton Valais there is a village named Cbampery, and here, an Italian contemporary points out, women have for generations worn the jupeculotte, quietly and unostentatiously, unconscious that there _is anything at all remarkable in their attire. bo while the Western world amuses ltselr with renewed discussions about the proper attire for women, these vmage maidens and elderly dames go about their day's work dressed in the debateable garment. Extremely picturesque they look in their culottes, which are cut exactly the same as those worn by the fathers, husbands, and brothers. They are made of a rough blue serge, that stands the wpar and tear of hard life. For a hard life those women do live amongst tho mountains, in a village perched on a green" slope, where the industry is pasturage. Many a girl starts out before daybreak, and does not return to the village until nightfall. There arc frequent wet days; mucn snow and storms rend the valley. The close-fitting costume is well adapted.tor the tyearerV needs, wlncli is the best that can be said of any garb.
