GENERAL ELECTION.

Sir, —I notice in to-night's Mail a very good suggestion by "Elector" in regard, to the ahove. We all know that our old friend the Hon. T. Y. has been faithfuL to the people; but- old' age comes to all and the hon. gentleman should give some able, active, younger man a chance to represent this town and district. I recognise that all have alike chances in this game on their merits; but a big proportion do not like to support another candidate. Sentiment is placed before judgment, therefore the younger man prefers to stand down. I would not myself like to see the hon. gentleman shoved out at the general election. —I would rather he stood down; but if he stands, that is what it will come to, I believe.' We can always hear from him if he retires, as he win for certain be given a- place in the Upper Hpuse, and that will keep him fresh in mind still, with politics. The civil servants are retired by compulsion at a certain age, therefore it is time 5 the electors retired' theirs, also by compulsion, on the age limit, to the Upper House. —I am, etc., BILL. 11th May, 1911. [The tone of this communication /Was such that it should have borne the name of the writer. We have eliminated some of its coarser periods, but regret that, even now, the only justification for its publication is that its omission might lead to a sense of grievance. After all, such ill-considered personal references defeat their, own ends. If those who, with an object in view, not quite, impersonal or disinterested, have conceived a systematic attempt to cast undeserved reflections on Mr Duncan, would venture into the open the sitting member will be afforded an opportunity of showing that he is not too old to make them feel particularly uncomfortable.—Ed. O.M.J
