HOCKEY.
LADIES' HOCKEY CLUB. : Yesterday afternoon was an ideal one for the' opening day of the'NoHh Otago Ladies' Hockey Club's season, and a good, .number .of friends of the Club were present at the A. and P. grounds for the occasion. As was to be expected in tlie first match of the season the players were not in the best of form, but; the. game was willing, which per-, lwips compensated for ' lack' of skill. The strength in the hitting of the backs was not up to the usual standard, but practice is all that is required. In the forward lines of both teams ineffectual : shooting appeared to be the order. The combination was on the whole very fair, but in the circle 1 the .shooting was weak. However, both to spectators and players the game was most enjoyable. The result of the afternoon's was a win for the Captain's team by 5. goals to 1. Mr M'Calluni kindly acted as referee.
