MINISTER IN THE BACK BLOCKS.

(Per Pkebs Association.} New Plymouth; May 5. The Minister of Public Works, accompanied. by the member for the district and county and borough representatives, went to the site ,of the proposed Mokau Vidge to-day. The Waitara Mail's reporter with the party telegraphed late this afternoon that a deputation met the Minister at Mokau, and pressed him for a subsidy of two pounds for every one pound spent by the local body, but the Minister Brmly refused, saying the most the Government could do would be pound for pound. The party had an experience m Tpngaporuhi when homeward _ bound. They brought motor cars, which weTe stuck in the mud, horses being obtained to pull the vehicles out. The Minister was expected to arrive back in Waitara at 4 p.m., but at 6 had not put in an appearance.
