KAPUA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) —Harvest Social and Presentation.— A harvest- home social was held at Wailiao Downs on Friday evening last, ;ind this opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr John Wall, of Waikakahi, from the residents of Kapua and Waihao Downs in appreciation of Mr Wall's many services as M.C. for a. groat number of years. The schoolroom was nicely decorated for the occasion with sheaves of wheat, oats, and bativy, and presented quite a- rural appearance. In proposing the toast of "The Guest of the Evening," Mr F.nikls referred to Mr Wall's genial manner and his willingness at all times to assist at social functions, and he also remarked that it was a very unusual thing to see a gentleman of Mr Will's age take such a keen interest in a pleasure like dancing. The toast was responded to by Mr Hugh Weir, on behalf of the residents of Waihao Downs and by Mr Patterson for the Kapuaites. Mr Turner then presented iir "Wall with a handsome silver tea service and oak tray, suitably inscribed, and at the same time referred in praiseworthy terms to Mr Wall's many fine qualities, and hoped that Mr Wall would be spared to enjoy many a cup of afternoon tea from the tea service, which was donated to him from a feeling of friendly appreciation of his services by the young people of both districts. Mr Wall, in reply; said he did not know how to thank them for their nice present, and for the kind remarks made about him. He had willingly given liis services to the young people because it was a pleasure for Mm to do so. ■ During the past 40 years he had dances, and he was pleased to know that his many services as M.C. were'appreciated by the young people. The speaker concluded by expressing a hope that he would live; to see the jubilee ■of the presentation. ■ During the songs were rendered by Mr Fyfe, and the dance music was capably played: by Mr James Tavendale.

; —The Drought.— Very dry and warn/ have been the days for the -past month, and farmers are feeling the effects of the shortage of water.- Several of them have had to commence carting water from the river, "for throughout the district springs that have never been known to fail are now dry. . 1 — Properties Changing Hands. —. I Understand that the property of Mr W..8. Jones, of Kapua, has found a purchaser in Mr John Meehan, of Waikakahi, and it is rumored that one or two other local farmers are contemplating selling out.
