CHEAPER CABLES.

Received January 25, at 10.50 p.m. Sydney,. January 25. Mr Milward, manager of the Pacific Cable Board in the Pacific, who lias returned from a.visit to Canada, says that the Board now controls the line of communication from Australia to Montreal, and has effected an installation which will enable the despatch of cables to be expedited by 25 per centum; in other words, they will De able to deal with twenty-five per centum more business in a given time. Mr Millward's mission to Canada was for the purpose of installing apparatus and taking over for the Board the line previously leased from the Canadian Pacific Telegraphs, and they can now carry messages over 6100 miles with only one land line. The old system required three handlings. Asked if the innovation would be likely to lead to a reduction in the rates within, a reasonable time, Mr Milward said "it places us in a better position in regard to reduced cost. Th<: present weekly average on the Pacific line is 4200 words. This shows ;< marked continuous increase, and it is conceivable if the Board increases its carrying capacity of cables to a large extent and the public supply sufficient business, a reduction in the rates may be effected."

Referring to the all-red route, he declared that it would obviously be advantageous to have a cable right through. The Atlantic cables at the present time were practically controlled by American capitalists.
