DECREES IN DIVINITY.
(Per. Pnrcss Association.) Cliristchurch, January 23.. On the motion of Sir Maurice O'Rorke, the Senate this morning resolved that in the opinion of the. Senate it is derogatory to the dignity of usefulness of the. New Zealand University that, it should be - debarred from granting degrees in divinity and- that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to the Government with a request that the law be amend-, ed next session so as to authorise, the granting of such degrees. The Chancellor described the motion as the thin end of the wedge to get religion into the schools. " Professors Macinillan Brown and Vpri "Haast also; opposed the. motion, Dr Salmond and" Professor Easterfield supporting it. The division was 13 to 8 for the motion.
