CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. ;

(Per Press Association.) • Christchurch, January 20. ' During the last few days' there have been several large lines of new wheat on offer, and a few of these have changed hands where prices could be agreed upon, but in other cases the growers asked more than the buyers were prepared to give. Sales have been made at 3s Id to 3s 2d at country stations, the latter price being given for a line of Waikari wheat which usually commands the highest price at the opening of the new season. Most of the wheat bought is to fill old contracts for shipment to the North Island, and merchants and millers generally say that 3s is all they are prepared to give. The wheat that has so far come forward is of splendid'quality, which speaks well for the character of this season's grain,'as the early ripening crops are usually thinner in the grain than Those cut later. There are very few oats offering," and what are 'coming forward are mostly Algerians. Nearly all the oats being cut are going into stack, and the quantity coming on the market early in the season is expected to be limited. New oatsheaf chaff is shortly expected on the market, and 70s is mentioned as likely, to be the opening price. No fresh business is reported iu malting barley. It is stated'that up to as 9d has been paid for a prime sample. Only a'few small lots of cocksfoot have come forward so far, and no price has yet beeii\fixed.

DTTXEDIX MARKETS

(Otago Daily Times.) The tariff of the Flourmillers' Association for flour and other lines is as follows:—Flour: Sacks, £9 ss; 1001b bags. £9 ]ss; 501b bans, £11); 251b bags, £lO os. Otmenl, £ll 10s per ton. Pearl barley, £l3 10s per ton. Bran, £3 15s per "ton. Pollard, £6 per ton. Tlie Flourmillers' Association reduced the price of bran by 10s during tbo week. A general interest is now being taken

in the harvesting operations at present in full swing. The weather in the past seven days has been very favorable tor harvesting operations, and the reaping of the crops has been in full swing in the Canterbury district. So far the grain that has come under review has proved to be of excellent quality, and some nicely Silled samples have been in circulation". These, of course, have been threshed from the stook, and a lew lines have changed hands. At Ashburton a sale or two of Federation wheat was effected on the basis of 3s Id per bushel on trucks, and offers have been made at the same figure for large hues of mixed wheat. At Timaru some lines of mixed pearl and Tuscan have changed hands at 3s 2d per bushel. It is, ol course, impossible at present to make anv definite prediction regarding the probable figure at which the market will open, but the price, above-mention-ed afford a fair indication. Provided good harvesting weather continues the supplv of wheat should be good and prices' satisfactory to both buyer and seller Some quantities of old wheat 'have been on offer during the week, •md there will be a certain proportion of grain to be carried over into the new SCtlSOIl* The oats position is in the meantime nrcttv stagnant, and prices tend to be ', chade easier than they were last week though in the absence ot much business definite quotations cannot be adhered to. A grade Gartons may be .Mentioned at from 2s 3d to 2s 3'd, f.0.b., s.i., with 15 grade at Jd to Id easier and sparrowhills at is 2M and 2s ■>d U>v A and H grade respectively. in Cauierhm-v new Dims have been on offer at 2s on trucks at country stations, and several lines „i very specia Algerians have changed hands at 2s itl and '•>.<* l-'.d in trucks. These lines represent very early sowings, however, and buyers must remember that the bulk of" the harvest will not be available for some weeks yet. In the meantime the North Island buyers have almost deserted the market on account of the coming in of the new season s crop (which is going to lie earlier than 'usual), and things are consequently slack; At this time of the year there ■is lilwavs the possibility that buyers "will anticipate the new season by a week and suddenly find themselves in straits for immediate supplies. In that event there will be (as there often has been in past years) a sudden flurry for a few days ere the old market is absorbed in the new. The current prices for other product are as follow*:-- -. - ,; '_ Chaff—: Prime heavy oaten sneat, :£o to £5 ss; medium to g00d,.-£4 lQs ,per Straw —Oaten, 40s; wheaten 35s per ° Hay, £2 10s to'£2 15s per ton. • • Potatoes-—Prime new' quality, in: good to £6 per ,tOll. .■' -■• -.- ■*"-'..:..-' : .-> .;■ ■';. , .-_• : ■' '■- Onions —Melbourne, £a 10s per ton.
