Among those .fortunate'people'/are the little'people ofj -our public schools, who' have not for six weeks'to" think of lessons.' The first of the, Oamaru public schools to break up-is :the- South, which yesterday held its annual' cerejmony in connection'with the. presentation' of prizes. The prizes .were presented to the lower and preparatory classes in the afternoon, the headmaster (Mr Aldred) .and the Chairman of-the School Committee (Mr Lu-, cas) making-hrief speeches. The ceremony-in-chief, however, was held in the gyhmasium in the evening in the presence, of a large gathering or children and parents and others. By the-generosity of parents and others the Committee had been enabled to purchase a goodly showing of prizes, and the prize-list was of such length and variety that Mr Aldred remarked that there was little need to condole with the.'unsuccessful scholars, their opportunities for success had been so many. All the children present looked alike in one respect—they all appeared to be happy, and. with good reason, too, for if they had not all got prizes, they had all .the prospect of a long holiday. On the walls of the gymnasium were disElayed specimens of brushwork, cardoard modelling, and writing, testimonials to the ingenuity and manual dexterity for the exercise of which the modern educational system afford ample opportunity. , The Chairman of the School Committee , (Mr Lucas) presided, and in an, introductory speech remarked that every parent must feel gratified at the work done hy the scholars during the year. Mr Lucas went on to speak to the boys and girls, taking as his text the words "Perseverance and punctuality." Regarding the attend- ■ ance, Mr Lucas said that it .had increased considerably during the year, the number of scholars at present "being 314, so that only six pupils were" required to secure the services of an extra assistant teacher. Mr Aldred apologised for the absence of Miss Cook, who had been obliged to leave on account of the illness of her father. He explained the system on which the class prizes were awarded—namely, on the highest aggregate of marks gained during the three terms of the year. These class prizes were the particular awards of merit, the gaining of which indicated that the pupils had worked well -and consistently. There were special prizes in addition, but these 6ftcn went to boys and girls who had special ability-. All who gained class prizes, however, had to work hard for them. , Mrs Lucas then presented the prizes. Following is "the prize-list: — —Standard I. — Dux of' class —Irene Hall. The Rev. D. Jamieson, who was invited to speak, remarked that he supr posed they were wondering why he was there. He was wondering himself. He had come because he had a great xespect for the Chairman of the Committee, whom he esteemed as a most level-headed citizen, and who, he felt quite certain, would not have invited him unless he had' expected him to say something that was not foolish. He remembered the time when he first went to school. Circumstances were altogether different then. His school was a little one in the North of Scotland, and one of the 'rules was that each scholar had to bring a peat each day during winter. Since that time he had attended many schools. His school days were very pleasant memories to him, and. if he had the opportunity he would go back to school. He always felt more sympathy for the boy not like to go to school. It was natural for a boy not to wish to settle down to work ; but it was an inclination that had to be overcome. They would learn that the greatest pleasure that could be obtained was the pleasure attaching to hard work. It was hard work, too, that made all the difference between one person and another. Some people would talk about natural gifts, but that all went for nothing. What really counted was hard work. He hoped they would have much pleasure in their holiday, not because the holiday was a time in which they ran away from work, but because it was a time in which they laid up strength for further work. Mr Jamieson proceeded to speak of the methods of learning, dwelling upon the benefits to be derived from the study of modern languages. Passing on to the uses of education, when it had been attained, lie urged the children to preserve the beautiful English language. They should never think that their education was finished, but should keep on adding to their store of knowledge and they would find in the work greater pleasure than ever miser had in his pile of-gold. If they did this they would always be able to look back on their school days with joy and thankfulness. Mr Luiian Dewar moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to all the people to whom they were indebted, including, the parents who had responded generously to the request for contributions to the prize-fund, the donors of special prizes, the staff, Mr Lucas, and the Rev. D. Jamieson.

The motion was carried with Jiearty applause. Mr Lucas said they could not help recognising the good work that lino, been" done'by the staff this year. The school had passed successfully through the ordeal of proficiency examinations. He would have liked to see the three pupils who gained competency certificates gain proficiency cards, but they all ;knew the vagaries of examinations, arid evidently these'pupils had been tripped up by them. Mr Aldred thanked Mr Lucas and members of the Committee for their appreciation of the work of the staff. They felt that the school had achieved a certain amount of success. Speaking on the subject of home work the headmaster said there was a tendency among children nowadays to think that they should not be asked to do any homework. He asked the parents to' recognise that with the efforts of the teachers, seconded by a little assistance at home, the success of the school would be greatly added to. Addressing; the boys, he advised them to have a" thoroughly good holiday, and he wished them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

SCHOOL CONCERT. The school concert was held

Mimro's Hall on the Ist December, and proved in every way a great success; the performers evidently gaining the goodwill of the audience, if one may judge from the hearty applause that followed their efforts. Where oil the performers were children, it would he a mistake to draw comparisons; howr ver, the favorites seemed to be "Off to Philadelphia," sung hy Maurice, Mulvena, in character; "Ten LittleNigger Boys," exceedingly well done by hoys of the infant department, and chorus by little girls; "Cainplown Races," hoys of Standard IV., in character "Robinson Crusoe." "Seasons." "Old King Cole," "My Pretty Maid" ; while the quadrille by children of the infant room was jjivatly admired. The success of the concert is greatly due to Mrs M'Gregor, for her kindness in assisting in the training of the performers and in playing all accompaniments. The teachers of the school (Bliss Kinder and Mr Allan) are to be congratulated on the success of what may, in fairness, be called a very good concert. The farce at the end elicited roars of laughter, and seems to imply that there is a considerable amount of histrionic talent latent among the rising generation of the district. Dr Steven made an efficient chairman, and carried out the programme in good style. A hearty vote of thanks was proposed by the chairman to all who took part in making a success of the concert: to the teachers for their efforts, to the parents for their goodness in providing the refreshments, which make all country concerts so enjoyable; to the members of Committee for their help, to the performers for their efforts, and to the public for their patronage and for the patient and favorable hearing they gave the children. Personally, I think the children did very well, and that the encouragement given by the audience was in some measure a factor in their success. WESTON SCHOOL. This school broke up yesterday for the holidays, when the prizes were distributed by Mrs J. R. Mitchell, wife ;of the esteemed Chairman of Committee. A slight memento was also presented the Rev. Mr Roseveare from the pupils of his class for religious instruction. Mr Kelly, in presenting it, referred to the able way in which .the class was conducted, and the good likely to result from the teaching of the Scriptures.

Mr Roseveare said that the class was a delight to him, and that his work was made easy for him by the assistance rendered by the teachers. He took the opportunity of thanking them, and also the Committee for their continued support. After again thanking the children he wished them all a. happy New Year and a return to school by' and bye reinvigorated for work.
