He whs the founder of the New Zealand Hardware Company, and still retained a large interest in it. A second reconstruction took place, and he then became Commissioner of Telegraphs and' Postmaster-General in the Atkinson Government. With the most of his colleagues ,be retired in_lßß4, and was nominated to the Upper House. For some years prior to his death he resided in England.
