CANTERBURY METROPOLITAN SHOW.

(Special to tho OamarirMail.} Chri&tchurch, November 10. Tho second .day of. tho Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association's metropolitan show is being held in mag-s nificcnt weather. There is a scorching • sun, with scarcely' a breath of wind. The grounds under foot are dry and Jiard almost to cracking point, and the grass everywhere iin the grounds has>a burnt appearance. 'There is a large attendance J±is Excellency the Governor, Lord Islington,! who'takes a keen interest in rural affairs, arrived on the ground at 11 o'clock, and was escorted round the show by Sir Geo. Clifford, vice-president of the Association. Sheep are a magnificent section, and nothing equal to it has ever been seen on the Aldington giounds previously In fact it is questionable if such a splendid show of sheep has evei before "been seen jii any part of the Dominion. Border Leicesters are-,the pick of the breeds, aiid represent 188 entries themselves. , Dr'Ajht horses likewise are a. good section. ' There were five entries in the aced entire class, and the award went to Mi J. D Wjlhe's Baron Everest, with Mr H Saunders' (Waimate) Major Stewart second. The, ,former will almost assured!} win the championship and the latter the reserve. Major Stewart will also win outright *tlre silver bowl presented by Lord Rothschild, for the best Clydesdale stallion by.an imported sire This hoise although only five years old, has already had his name- engraved twice > on the bowl Baron Everest is ineligible, ow ing to being imported The cattle likewise are a strong section, both m milking and beef breeds, all the big breeders •being represented. , The draught horse section attracted consideiablec attention, and the judging was very keenly watched In* the three-year rid entires H Saunders' > Scottish Ciown, sued bv Mr J O'Buon's (Oamaiu) Black Knight, wa* placed first, Mi J. Boag's Royal Conqueror, by Roy_al Fame, second, B Ruddock's Sandv Chief, by Sand\'s Heir, third There were seven entiles m the entire class, including Mrs J D Oimond's Bonny Glen,- who attracted considerable .notice The first aw ai d w ant tb Mr O'Brien's entrj sired by Premier Pride out of May Queen, and the second and third to Mr John Shearer s entries, which were also sued by 1 rentier Pride. The tliree-j ear old fillies were a magnificent nngj twelve excellent animals facing the judges, including an cntrv by Mrs Oimond. It was easily apparent that one of, the judges favored this entry, while the o + Hei did not. It is i>ot surprising, therefore, that a third man had again to be called in to adjudicate. The result was the placing of entries 07 Mr John Sheaier first and second Both these were sired by Premier , Pride, a Shepherd-Lad mare exhibited bj Sidney Smith being third. JVliss -B. Belcher, Waitaki South, gamed the following honois in the home industries section —Six oven scones, second, six- girdle 'scones, fust and second, fancy butter, second.
