.In the London Spectator of August last there appeared an article entitled "Li the Southern Alps," written by Miss 13. E. Baughan. This lady, who is a New Zealander, is already wellknown as a writer of poetry and prose of considerable merit. The article in question has just been issued in booklet form by Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, Christchurch (price Is and Is 6d), under the title of "Snow King of the Southern Alps." Considerable additions have been made to the original article, and 15 photo, reproductions of alpine scenery, depict the''beauties of the Mount Cook range, the whole forming an excellent and seasonable little souvenir for sending to friends at homo and abroad.
The Lone Hand for November (Messrs Gordon and Gotch,. Dunedin) has a number of interesting "and instructive articles, and some capital short stories. As a seasonable topic, "The First Melbourne ' Cup" will appeal to many readers, while those who prefer more substantial fare will be pleased with an appreciation of the work of G. W.
