TIMARU MARKETS.

(Timaru Herald.) Advices received from Borne during tlio past week have been of,| a disheartening nature, and to some* extent' there effect lias been felt in the.Tiiniaru market. Business has been/very much on the dull side for . some .considerable time, and ic_ is only at odd intervals that transactions ,of any | magnitude take place. There now seems to be a little more inquiry for milling wheat foi use within the Dominion, but 'prices generally speaking are at a standstill. The steamer Kaikoura,'' which was- in port yesterday, was taking her * consignment of sprouted grain, antl this will just about finish' the" export business in this class' of -wheal for some time. It.is difficult to predict what will happen to the bulk 'of this stuff which is at present in the country, but probably- it will be used as fowl wheat. Quotations for grain of undoubted quality are: —Tuscan and Hunters 3s 6d, Velvet, '4s,; , f.o.b. >sa r clcs extra. Sprouted wheat according 'to sample is worth from 2s 8d to 3s f.0.b., s.i. iO#ts are getting very scarce in South Canterbury 1 , and prices are firming slightly. One or two Timaru merchants during the .past week have had enquiries from the south, where tlio supply was supposed •to be . plentiful. Good feed' Duns can be quoted at 2s 2d to 2s 3d,, f:o.b., 5.i.,. Gartens 2s to 2s 2d. and Danish Is 9d to 2s, f.0.b.. Since last week the price of potatoes has'risen 20s to 30s per ton for firstclass samples, and these are now worth from £ll 10s to £l2 f.0.b.,, sacks in. There is only a fair demand, 1 and that a local one. ~...- • I
