TO THE ANTARCTIC.

(Per Press Association.)_ Ghristchurch, October 28. The Terra Nova, which arrived at Lj-.tclton to-day, left London on June V,' rud although a stop oi' three weeks ■vly, made at Capetown, with a shorter slay at both officers and ircii expressed' delight at having reached j'vttclton. In the forecastle the expressions of pleasure at the sight of the port and iis background of. hills were particularly enthusiastic. The best run during the voyage.'from Home, made under nail, was entered in the log on September 14. The vessel was then on the way to Capetown, and (luring the twenty-four hours she covcrecT 183 miles without any assistance from her engines, .lust before Simon's Bay was reached 227 miles were covered in one day, with the aid of both forms of power.

The first message Lieut. Evans received wh?u the Terra Nova ...came alongside the liarf was a congratulatory telegram from the Premier. It was as. follows: "Lieut. Evans, Terra Nova. — I extend a hearty welcome to yourself, office;-", and men noon your arrival in the Dominion, and I trust your mission under Captain Scott will prove successful. I Icok forward with pleasure to meeting you before von .depart.—J; G. Watmi."

What struck the onlookers very forcibly to-day was the youthful appearance of the members of the expedition,, from the young commander downwards. No fewer than eight members of the expedition accompanied Giptain Scott on bis Drevious expedition. They are Lieut. Evans, Warrant Officer Feather, Chief Stoker Lashley, Petty Officers Evans, Crcan, and Williamson, Seaman Heakl, and Sailmaker Smythe. Seaman Paton, who accompanied the Nimrod expedition, is also a member of the party. In' the officers' messroom of the Terra Nova are autograph photographs of King Edward and Queen Alexandra and King George and Queen Tvlarv. That of the late King and QueenMother previously belonged.to the Diseovciy. King Edward's is dated August oth, 1901, and Queen Alexandra's Coronation Day, August. 9th,. 1902. Those of! King' George and Queen Mary are dated 1910.

It is surprising the large number of scientists aboard who are. graduates of Cambridge University. The Terra Nova is a much more roomy vessel than the Nimrod, in which Sir Ernest Shackleton sailed to and from Antarctica.

After the Nimrod's poky quarters and cramped spaces the Terra Nova seems ciuite palatial. However, when the dogs, ponies, sledges and other paraphernalia have been accommodated the members of the expedition will probably require all the room there is left to enable them to get about. , " " Wellington, October 2S. • Captain Scott, R.N., leader of the Antarctic expedition, was entertained by a number of the local scientific men at luncheon at the Wellington" Club today. ' He left for Lyttelton this evening. - '- -
