The topic of the day here is the weather; and all sorts of predictions are being made' by lar.mers. -'-However, ■■ a good'downpour of rain; would -be welcomed!: bv all,' as both/grass and .grain crops are beginning; to feel the effects of the.-dry weather; ■ The percentage of lambs in .this district has been satisfactory, although it does not come up to'last year's returns. : 'Well-sinking has been going on in. this district tor some time and quite a large number of wells have been put down, especially oil .the Waikakaln Estate. Some of the pipes have been driven to a distance of 270 ft:, and m some cases there is a supply cf from 80 to 120 feet of water in the pipes. This is proving a great boon to settlers who have, up till this time, been.unable to get .a supply of water for- some- of their paddocks. The plant used in the operation, of driving the pipes came from Christcliurch.
