HORSE RACING.

NORTH OTAGO JOCKEY CLUB

'SPRING- MEETING. i\' -<*

THE SECOND DAY" 1 .

Despite the gloom.} predictions the North Otago Spring meeting was; from d sporting point of view,'a greater success than gatnermgs that hate promised j.,icater things; The attendance was, on the whole,'.good, speculation w as approximately the same as last ■\car, lacing, although sevcial fields were small, was mtciesting. The lol- ■ lowing figures are enlightening.

Gates 1909—£ 244 16 1910— 261 10 , Investments 1909—£6319 1910— 6263 10 License Fees 1909—£ 350 1910— 205

Any report of the meeting is altogether inadequate tliat fails to make reference to the work of the officials. Of these, of course, was the Secretary, whose arrangements were entirely complete, and who had everything under liis' thumb, and he was assisted by courteous clerks. The starting of Mr Piper left nothing to be desired. At times his task was easy on account of the small fields, but even when he had a" bunch to deal with, he despatched the'm in grand style. Mr Duncan's position in the box made no exacting- calls on his judgment, but his duties, .as in the case of the other officers, were carried out punctiliously. A feature of the meeting was the lack of success of the local horses, for with over 20 starts not one of them was first past the post. The results of the races omitted from yes'terday's. paper arc: CLIFTON WELTER HANDICAP, of • 75 sows; second horse to receive 7 sovs and the third 3 sovs out of the stake. Minimum a\ eight, 7st 71b. Whistlecrai't came out at the entrance to the straight arid won on his own, with Crown Derby just a head iu front of Merry Lass, and Czar Kolokol well last. Time, Imin 16 l T sth sec. Alto (Beale) was the only other starter. -The quartet got away well together, but, Alto quickly lost ground. Land Rose and Susa raced together to the turn, but the latter gained quickly and drew away, winning comfortably by a length, with Windward close up. Time, lmin 16sec.
