Mr J. H. Rice, at one time headmaster of Onmaru South .School, and latterly i:i the service of the Taranaki Education Board, has retired oil superaiumation. .The death occurred at Herbert yesterday of Ml" John Mitchell, at the age of .76 years, after a residence in this district of seven years. Mr Mitchell came from. Scotland about ?>0 years ago, for over 20 of which he was a,.successful farmer in the Upper Owaka district. Seven years ago lie retired from active life and .camfe to Herbert. He was a keen'judge of sheep, and in that capacity officiated at a number of exhibitions in Scotland. He also devoted a •food deal of time to breeding, the Cheviot breed being his fancy. He leaves a widow, one son, and four daughters, one of whom is Mrs W. M'Millan, of Herbert.
