SPORTING.

AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI,

(Per Presß AsSociATiSN-.) New Plymouth, September 2: The finest football struggle.seen here this year and one of the finest games yet played between the Auckland and Taranaki representative Rugby teams was played on the Recreation Ground this afternoon-ill the presence of 40UU spectators. A strong southerly wind had dried the ground, which the previous 'day looked in an almost impossible state. Each province was represented by its strongest combination. Taranaki won by 8 points (two unconverted tries, scored by Cameron) to d (a penalty goal, kicked by Francis). The better team won on the day's play, Taranaki's superiority lying in the back division, whilst the forwards were very evenly matched; the Auckland vanguard being superior in handling the ball; Auckland's backs were very sound on defence, but their attack was not as strong as their opponents'. The local team, although altered in personnel but slightly, was almost unrecognisable as | the team Which played Waiiganui last week. Had they been able to get the ball clean away from the scrum Taranaki must have won fey more. Cameron's first try was the culminating point of a movement initiated in thenown twehty-fivej Myhott and most oT the backs handling the ball and being splendidly suppporte'd in tHe fun being made by Stbhr, Sheehan, and Cameron. The points were even at half-time. In the second spell Cameron's score again emanated from Mynott, who had a chance to score near the posts, but unselfishly sent out to Sheehan and Cameron. The kicking oh the whole was poor. O'Sullivan, of . the " Taranaki team, and forniefly of the All Blacks combih'afioii-; strained himself severely, and is unlikely to take the field again.

The following players have been chosen to represent North Otago in the match to be played on the Caledonian Ground on Thursday afternoon next against the South Canterbury team: Full back. Ross} threequarters— Duthie, W, Currah, and King; fiveeighths—Mullin and E; Currah; half, M'Galium ; forwards —Lees, Diver, Brenton; Clarke; C; Molioyj Grant; Perry, and Sqott-. ~ Emergencies Breed, M'Gbmbie. The above are requested to meet at the Swan Stables to-night at 7.30 o'clock. The fixture is ,an annual one; and a .closely-contested game is, anticipated'. AS the last northward train leaves Oamaru at 3.45, an early start is inevitable, but we understand the local Union are making an effort to get the tradespeople to close their premises at 12 o'clock, so as to enable their employees to witness the game, which will rommenee at 1.45 p.m. HORSE RACING.
