BREACHES OF AWARD

(Per Press Association.) Auckland September 1. At the Magistrate's Court to-day the Carpenters' Union proceeded against W. G. Smith for a breach of the preference clause. Defendant said he had employed a new arrival from the Old Gounifv without asking him'-if'he. Was a unionist. The man was very anxious for a job, and witness thought he was doing a good turn in giving liini employment. Mr Kettle, S.M.: "Yes, doubtless you did; but you should he careful to explain our laws to new arrivals." A fine of 10s and costs (£2 7s) was inflicted.
