FRENCH REPUBLIC RICHER THAN EVER. Viscount Georges d'Avenel, a political economist, who has the unique gift of making statistics interesting,- gave a curious historical lecture recently on the wealth of France. His view is that democracy enriched instead of impoverished a nation, and he certainly proved it as far as this country is concerned. France to-day is six times richer than she was under the old monarchy and ten times richer than in the middle ages. Her total fortune amounts to £9,200,000,000, .as compared with £1,800,000,000 > only recently.
